How Harbor keeps you safe

Harbor is a place to talk to someone who gets it. Here’s exactly how it works, for students, parents and counselors.

Need help right now?

Harbor is peer support, not a crisis service. If you’re in crisis or thinking about hurting yourself, please reach out now:

Who you talk to

Right now, every student chats with Harbor’s founder, who went through their parents’ divorce too. As mentors join, each one is reviewed personally before they can talk to anyone, and mentors only talk with students in their own age group: under 18 with under 18, and 18+ with 18+.

You stay anonymous

Students never give their name. The person you talk to sees you as “Student #” and a number, plus your age and the experiences you chose to share. Your email address is never shown to anyone.

Every message is checked

  • Contact details can’t be shared. Phone numbers, emails, links and social media handles are blocked, so nobody can move a conversation off Harbor.
  • Crisis language gets help fast. If a message suggests someone may be in crisis, they’re shown crisis lines immediately and Harbor’s safety team is alerted.
  • Warning signs are flagged. Asking for photos, asking someone to keep secrets, trying to meet up, or asking where someone lives or goes to school alerts the safety team.

Who can read chats

Chats are private between the two people in them. If a message is flagged or a chat is reported, Harbor’s safety team can read that chat to make sure everyone is okay.

Report and block

Every chat has a Report button, and every report is read. Harbor can pause any account that breaks the community guidelines.

Ages 14 and up

Harbor is for ages 14 and up. If someone younger signs up, their account is deleted straight away.
